We took a little trip to Granada. We left early in the morning and came home the next day. It’s about 3 hours away by bus. Thus far, I have not found a city that even compares to Sevilla, but Granada… Granada is unbelievable. From far away you can see the beautiful snow peaked Sierra Nevada mountain rage, blue sky, and lots of sun.
While we were walking around, I saw an orange tree in the shape of a heart with the light hitting only half of it. I had just learned a really sweet phrase used here in Sevilla, "media naranja" meaning literally, middle orange, but metaphorically speaking "soul mate." Two oranges, split in half, coming together.... how precious is that!? Ah, I love it.
We were in the gardens of the palace and heard some English speaking students behind us. Where were they from? The University of Illinois… where are Jordyn and Kelly from? University of Illinois. Could you believe that? Such a small world!! They were all architecture students and had friends in common. They were studying in Versailles for a year. We walked around the grounds with them and got a kebob. We had heard that King Kebab was the place to be…. We spotted Kebob King and thought, hey! That’s got to be the same thing. Ehhhh wrong. It was good, but the next day when we found the real King Kebab we were pleasantly surprised.
After our lunch break, we met up with Carolina who missed the bus in the morning. Alarm malfunction. In Granada, you can go into a bar, order a drink, and you get a free tapa. What a good deal! So we went on a fabulous bar/tapa crawl throughout the city. I also discovered a really delicious white wine that was infused with peaches. So, so, so good!!
After our fun night, we headed back to the hostel. Our little tiny room had two bunk beds. Kelly climbed on top of hers to find that the bed wasn’t really supporting her. We looked under, and out of 5 wood planks, 4 of them were broken. Uh oh! So we looked at our bed, same thing. What wound up happening? Four grown women slept in 2 beds. Me and Jordyn in one, Kelly and Carolina in the other; it was SO funny! We didn’t want the diseased blanket that everyone knows no one washes to touch us so we cuddled with a sheet and didn’t move the entire night. Carolina woke up bright and early to see La Alhambra since she missed it earlier and I didn’t even hear her leave the room. We were out cold.
9 AM came and the rest of us got up to eat some breakfast and meet up with Carolina for our segway tour. Yep, a segway tour!! We took segways up and down the mountains of Granada. It’s not so easy by the way… I don’t think I’ll ever make fun of a mall cop again. For those of you who don’t know, a segway moves by the distribution of your weight. You lean forward, it goes forward, you lean back, it breaks. I was a little nervous at first, but I got the hang of it. I fell off once, Jordyn fell off twice. Oh well, no one is perfect.
We took the segways really far up to see the caves built within the mountains and we were able to see beautiful views of the city and the palace. We sure did get a lot of looks from people. A few came up to us asking where they can find such a tour; I kind of felt cool. It was really fun, definitely the best way to see the city. We were able to see so much in such a short amount of time. Plus, everything is up hill so many tourists miss out on all of the good stuff because it’s tough to get up there.
After that, we headed towards our bus! That’s it, short trip, but a good one. Granada is now second best to Sevilla. Another small Spanish city, any patterns there? If visiting Spain for skiing or just in the Spring, it’s definitely a place to visit. Granada, ya did good! J
